Dozens of protesters, including parents and children, rallied in New Delhi on Sunday to demand government action against the city’s toxic air pollution. As a thick, acrid smog blanketed the capital, demonstrators held placards with powerful messages like “I miss breathing.”
New Delhi, a metropolitan region of 30 million, is consistently ranked among the world’s most polluted capitals. The crisis peaks every winter as cooler air traps a deadly mix of emissions from traffic, factories, and crop burning. At the protest site near India Gate, levels of PM2.5—cancer-causing microparticles—were measured at more than 13 times the World Health Organization’s daily health limit.
Protesters expressed deep frustration with “piecemeal” government initiatives, calling for serious solutions to a public health emergency that a Lancet study linked to 3.8 million deaths in India over a decade.
