As India presents its climate action achievements at the ongoing COP30 summit in Belém, a new analysis from The Federal suggests these claims hide more than they reveal. While India’s national statement highlights achievements in reducing emission intensity, boosting non-fossil fuel capacity, and increasing forest cover, the report offers a stark reality check.
It cites the 2025 UNEP Emissions Gap Report, noting India saw the highest absolute growth in emissions in 2024. It also questions claims of green energy success, pointing out that while installed capacity is high, actual electricity generation from renewables remains low, with coal still contributing over 74% of power. This critical perspective argues that India’s climate mitigation efforts are more rhetoric than substance, citing systemic weakening of environmental laws and continued deforestation.
