In a surprising move that has sent shockwaves through the environmental community, India has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2028 UN Climate Change Conference (COP33). Prime Minister Narendra Modi had originally announced the bid with much fanfare at COP28 in Dubai, positioning India as a champion for the Global South. However, the Indian government has now requested to host the much smaller UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2026 instead. Experts suggest that escalating global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine, may have influenced the decision, as hosting a massive diplomatic event like COP requires intense geopolitical stability and resources.
