The United Nations has released a definitive report revealing that by 2050, two-thirds of humanity will reside in urban areas. This shift adds another 2.5 billion people to cities, with nearly 90% of this increase concentrated in Asia and Africa. While urbanization can drive economic growth, it presents a massive environmental challenge: cities already account for the bulk of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The rapid expansion of “megacities”—urban centers with more than 10 million inhabitants—is reshaping the planet’s surface. To prevent an environmental catastrophe, governments must prioritize sustainable urban planning. This means investing in green infrastructure, decarbonized public transport, and affordable housing that doesn’t encroach on vital ecosystems. The future of our climate will be decided by how we build, manage, and sustain our cities today. We cannot afford to prioritize concrete over the climate.
