When People Are Blocked and Polluters Walk Free: The Real Face of COP30

At COP30 in Belém, the truth of global climate politics is unfolding in plain sight. Indigenous communities—whose lands are plundered for mining, drilling and mega-projects—were blocked at the summit entrance as they protested the violence inflicted on their territories. Their message was simple: climate justice must begin with the people who protect the forests, rivers and biodiversity that the world depends on.

Inside the venue, however, the atmosphere tells another story. More than 1,600 fossil-fuel lobbyists—yes, one out of every 25 participants—have gained easy access to shape the agenda. While frontline communities struggle to get their voices heard, the corporate machinery responsible for ecological devastation enjoys privileged entry.

Meanwhile, India and other Global South countries are pushing back against policies like the EU’s carbon border mechanism, which threatens to shift the financial burden of climate action onto developing nations. The climate crisis is man-made, but the injustice is maintained by governments serving corporate greed.
