The UN General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to back a historic advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), affirming that States have a legal obligation to protect the climate from greenhouse gas emissions. The resolution, led by the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, passed with 141 votes in favour.
Eight countries voted against the resolution, including the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Israel, Yemen, Belarus, and Liberia. A further 28 nations abstained. While the ICJ’s opinion is not legally binding, it is expected to carry significant moral and legal weight in climate litigation worldwide. The vote marks a pivotal moment in the global fight for climate accountability.
