Ten Years After the Paris Agreement: Renewables Surge but Emissions Still High

Ten years after the landmark Paris climate agreement of 2015, the world has seen measurable shifts in energy and emissions — but the crisis is far from over. In 2024, renewable energy grew by 15%, making up more than 90% of all new power generation capacity, while investment in clean energy exceeded $2 trillion, twice the amount invested in fossil fuels. Electric vehicles now represent about a fifth of new cars sold worldwide. China and India both generate more than half of their electricity from low-carbon sources, and global warming projections have fallen from a potential 4 °C pre-Paris to about 2.5 °C today, if all current pledges are met. Yet emissions remain high, and about 90% of the increase in greenhouse gases since Paris has come from China. Disagreements over climate finance and failed promises threaten the global consensus, making this decade pivotal for keeping the Paris goals alive.
