India’s Great Nicobar Island—one of the world’s most biodiverse zones—is being bulldozed in the name of “development”. Over 200 ecologists, researchers, and environmental experts have written to the Indian government demanding an immediate halt to the ₹72,000 crore mega projects that include a transshipment port, airport, power plant, and township. These projects threaten ancient rainforests, coral reefs, and the homeland of the Shompen and Nicobarese tribes.
Experts warn that these corporate-driven ventures could permanently destroy the fragile ecosystem that shields the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago from climate impacts. Yet the government continues to fast-track clearances, ignoring both ecological science and local rights. This is not “progress”—it is a state-led ecological assault for profit.
