Mumbai Among World’s Top 10 Megacities Facing “Unusual Heat” Due to Climate Change

A sobering new scientific analysis has named Mumbai as one of the top ten megacities globally to experience “unusual temperatures” over the last three months (December 2025 – February 2026). According to the report by Climate Central, human-induced climate change is no longer a distant threat—it is a present-day driver of extreme heat. Mumbai witnessed 17 “risky heat days” during this period, where temperatures were significantly hotter than historical norms, directly linked to the surge in global carbon emissions.

The data shows that more than one in six people on Earth felt the strong influence of climate change every single day this past winter. In India, while Srinagar recorded the highest number of climate-shifted days, Mumbai’s status as a high-density “Urban Heat Island” makes its population particularly vulnerable. The lack of green cover and the relentless expansion of concrete are trapping heat, pushing the city toward a health crisis including heat strokes and respiratory issues. Despite these warnings, urban planning continues to prioritize high-rise development over ecological resilience. We are at a crossroads: we must demand cooler, greener cities and a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels before our megacities become unlivable.
