Is Delhi NCR going to be hit by a major earthquake ? Most likely, though we don’t know “WHEN”?
Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology says, the small tremors are no certainty, but a strong quake cannot be ruled out. The truth is, Delhi NCR got hit by Six strong (over 5.5 in Richter scale) earthquakes in the past 300 years, or once every 50 years on average. Last one in 1966.
We don’t know when, but we can sure prepare. As is famously said – Earthquakes don’t kill, bad buildings do. And Delhi has plenty of weak buildings, packed densely, in most vulnerable areas. Are our governments – States and centre, taking any preparations to save our lives, property and Livelihoods ? Or are they left us to nature’s fury, like in the case of Covid-19 ? Will there be only blame games, or sensible public education, mobilizations, studies and preparations?
What can we citizens do, thru our local elected bodies, organisations and public actions? Let’s hear answers to these important questions and prepare ourselves better.
