India Unveils 2035 Climate Roadmap: Steady Progress Amid Global Uncertainty

India has officially raised the bar for its climate ambitions, revealing a new set of targets for 2035 that aim to balance rapid economic growth with environmental responsibility. Approved by the Union Cabinet on March 25, 2026, the updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commits the nation to reducing its emissions intensity by 47% from 2005 levels and ensuring that 60% of its total electricity capacity comes from non-fossil fuel sources by 2035.

While critics describe the upgrades as “modest,” the move is a significant signal of stability at a time when other major economies are retreating from green commitments. India has already smashed its previous 2030 target of 50% non-fossil capacity five years early—reaching 52.57% by February 2026. The new roadmap also pledges to create a massive carbon sink of 3.5 to 4 billion tonnes of $CO_2$ equivalent through expanded forest cover. By choosing this “middle path,” India is positioning itself as a reliable leader in the Global South, proving that a developing powerhouse can decarbonize without sacrificing the energy needs of its people.
