India Reaffirms Paris Agreement Commitment, 2035 Climate Targets Under Consultation

The Government of India has officially reaffirmed its commitment to the Paris Agreement, informing the Rajya Sabha that the country is steadily working toward its climate goals. According to the Union Environment Ministry, India is on track to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45% and achieve 50% non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. These targets, updated in 2022, also include creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through increased forest cover.

Addressing inquiries regarding the next phase of climate action, the Ministry stated that the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the 2031-2035 period are currently being finalized. This process involves extensive stakeholder consultations to ensure a robust and achievable framework. While the 2035 NDC has not yet been submitted, the government highlighted that the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change (PMCCC) remains active, having last met in April 2025 to review India’s roadmap toward achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.
