India Falls from Climate Champion to Middling Performer as Coal Reigns Supreme

India’s much-vaunted green transition is facing a harsh reality check. After years of being ranked among the world’s better-performing climate actors, India has now slipped to 23rd place in the latest Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) — dropping out of the “high performer” category.

This dramatic slide comes despite bold rhetoric and visible renewables build-out, and underscores a sharp disconnect: the country remains deeply anchored in coal, auctions new fossil blocks, bears fossil subsidies and lacks a clear coal-exit timeline.

The ranking exposes how corporate interests and government complicity combine to derail climate progress. The world must see that India’s development path is still tied to dirty energy — and that means disasters on the frontline will only worsen.
