The Indian government has granted clearance for the massive ₹31,380-crore Sawalkote hydropower project on the Chenab River in Jammu & Kashmir — reviving a decades-old plan for a 1,856 MW dam in one of India’s most fragile Himalayan zones. Touted as a “green energy” move, this project will in fact submerge villages, displace mountain communities, and devastate riverine ecosystems that sustain millions downstream.
For years, independent scientists have warned that damming Himalayan rivers like the Chenab increases disaster vulnerability — triggering landslides, siltation, and loss of biodiversity. Yet, corporate-driven “clean energy” pushes continue to override environmental clearances and public hearings.
Once again, corporate greed and state policy join hands to turn the Himalayas into a profit frontier — all in the name of renewables. Real climate justice demands protecting rivers, not burying them under concrete.
