A catastrophic global hunger crisis is intensifying, driven by overlapping forces of conflict, climate breakdown, economic stress and displacement, warns the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). According to the latest ENS Newswire report, an astounding 318 million people in 68 countries are projected to face crisis levels of hunger or worse in 2026 — more than twice the number recorded in 2019. In Afghanistan alone, more than 17 million people are staring down starvation amid a brutal winter, where drought, earthquake damage, job loss and shrinking humanitarian aid have converged to push millions to the brink. Child malnutrition is expected to rise sharply, with nearly four million children at risk of severe undernutrition.
The WFP emphasizes climate shocks — from crop-destroying droughts to rising temperatures — as a leading driver of hunger, while conflict relentlessly disrupts food systems and access. With funding falling dangerously short, millions are being left without essential food assistance. Governments and wealthy donors must urgently step up resources and decisive climate action to avert mass starvation and humanitarian collapse.
