COP30 ends with compromise: adaptation wins, fossil fuels ignored

The 30th iteration of the global climate summit, COP30, concluded in Belém — and what emerged is deeply unsatisfying for the people on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Governments finally agreed to triple adaptation finance by 2035, for developing nations to cope with worsening floods, heatwaves and storms. But glaringly omitted was any binding roadmap to phase out fossil fuels — the very driver of these catastrophes. Corporate-friendly governments and fossil-fuel states blocked meaningful progress, leaving huge gaps. For India and other Global-South nations, this means more promises with fewer guarantees, while the biggest polluters continue business as usual under the cover of “transition”. The climate crisis is man-made; what we’re witnessing at COP30 is the grip of corporate greed over global decision-making.
