Coal Still King: India’s Renewable Rise Undermined by Fossil Addiction

While India boasts about record renewable capacity, the reality on the ground remains darkened by coal dust. A new report in The Wire reveals that coal will continue to dominate India’s power mix for years to come, as the government doubles down on fossil-fuel projects under the guise of “energy security.” This means more displacement of Adivasi communities, more polluted rivers, and more deadly air for millions.
Despite global pledges, the Modi government’s policies are clearly aligned with corporate coal giants who profit from public suffering. Every new “coal expansion plan” deepens both ecological collapse and economic injustice. India can lead a green transition — but not while coal continues to feed the profits of the few and the destruction of the many.
