Climate Chaos Hits Hard: Wildfires & Extreme Events Rack Up Over $120 Billion in 2025

The escalating climate emergency inflicted staggering costs on the global economy in 2025, with heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, storms, floods and cyclones together causing over $120 billion in insured losses, according to a report highlighted this weekend. The UK-based Christian Aid analysis reveals that these costs reflect more than just isolated “natural disasters” — they are the foreseeable result of climate breakdown driven by continued expansion of fossil fuels and political inaction.

The report finds that the single most expensive event in 2025 was wildfires in California, which alone caused $60 billion in damage and killed more than 400 people, underscoring how extreme heat and shifting weather patterns have intensified fire seasons.

Southeast Asia’s cyclones and floods, with $25 billion in damages and over 1,750 fatalities, and massive flooding in China costing $11.7 billion were also among the costliest events.

Behind these numbers lies a stark truth: the poorest nations, least responsible for causing the climate crisis, suffer the worst impacts, with floods in India and Pakistan killing more than 1,860 people and affecting millions. Business Standard
